Nestled between Orlando and Tampa on I-4, Lakeland is home to a vibrant downtown area and plenty of mom-and-pop shops. The average cost of car insurance in Lakeland is $193 per month for liability-only coverage and $293 per month for full coverage.
These rates are much higher than the national averages of $104 for liability coverage and $214 for full coverage. Our editorial team spent 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. Criteria are weighted by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.
We rate each company on a 1 to 5 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. We update ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.
Third-party financial ratings: We use data from AM Best, S&P, Moody's, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 20,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also considered third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the United States, as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
Availability and reach: Insurify identified the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share to score availability and reach.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Lakeland
If you’re looking for the lowest rates for your driving record and personal situation, the following tips can help you in your search:
Bundle policies. Many insurance companies offer multi-policy discounts when you purchase car insurance with other policies, such as business insurance, renters insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance.
Look for discounts. Ask any insurance agents you’re working with about available discounts to get the best rate possible. Insurers may offer discounts for good driving, vehicle safety features, completing a defensive driving course, or being affiliated with certain organizations.
Drive safely. Focus on safe driving practices to maintain a clean record. Adhere to traffic laws, avoid accidents, and stay clear of violations to keep your premiums low.
Shop free quotes. Gather quotes from multiple companies to compare prices and find the insurer that offers you the lowest rate. Doing this when your policy renews can also help you find cheap insurance.

Car insurance requirements in Florida
To drive legally in Florida, you must have at least personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability insurance. PIP insurance provides coverage for 80% of medical expenses for covered injuries, up to $10,000, regardless of fault. Meanwhile, property damage liability insurance handles the costs of property damage you cause in an accident.
Remember, you have to maintain continuous coverage, even during periods when your vehicle isn’t in use, to comply with Florida’s legal requirements.
Here are the minimum car insurance requirements in the state:[3]
Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Personal injury protection
$10,000 per accident
Property damage liability
$10,000 per accident
While you must have the above minimum coverages, you can add the following to enhance your auto insurance policy:
Collision coverage
Collision insurance pays for damages when you hit stationary objects or other vehicles, even if you’re at fault.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive insurance pays for vehicle damages from non-collision events, such as fire, vandalism, theft, falling objects, and natural disasters.
Gap coverage
If you financed or leased your car, gap insurance will cover the difference between your auto loan balance and the insurance settlement in the event of a total loss.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage kicks in if someone without insurance — or someone without enough insurance to cover your damages and injuries — causes an accident.
Glass coverage
Don’t overlook the importance of glass protection, which covers windshield and glass damage and may even offer no-deductible coverage for side windows, rear windows, and glass sunroofs.
Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident
For Lakeland drivers with past incidents — like speeding tickets, driving under the influence, at-fault accidents, or other moving violations — finding affordable car insurance can be difficult. These types of incidents on your record signal to insurance companies that you’re prone to risky driving behaviors and have a higher likelihood of filing a claim. To offset this higher risk, insurers raise rates.[4]

An at-fault accident can cause a substantial increase in your car insurance rates because insurance companies perceive it as a sign of higher risk for future claims.[4] In Lakeland, this translates to an average rate of $248 per month if you have an at-fault accident on your record.
Avoiding accidents is essential for safety and plays a key role in maintaining lower insurance premiums. Some insurers offer accident forgiveness programs, which will prevent rates from increasing after your first at-fault accident in a given period, usually three to five years.

These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.
Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).
Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:
Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
